About Advanced Psychological Resources

Research-Informed Resources for Anger Assessment and Treatment

Advanced Psychological Resources provides resources focused on anger, anger regulation, assessment, psychotherapy, and the treatment of maladaptive anger.

Anger is a natural emotion, but it may become dysfunctional when it is frequent, intense, long-lasting, quick to occur, or difficult to regulate. It may also become detrimental when it fuels interpersonal conflict, clouds judgment, affects physical health, or leads to harmful patterns of expression.

APR’s work focuses on careful assessment, anger regulation, and research-informed treatment methods for individuals, professionals, organizations, and institutions seeking a structured approach to anger.

APR’s Approach

APR begins with assessment. When a person reports anger, it is important to examine how often it occurs, how long it lasts, how intense it becomes, how quickly it develops, and how little it takes for anger to occur.

APR also examines the many ways anger may be expressed. Anger may be internalized or externalized, reflected back toward the person who provoked it, deflected toward others, expressed verbally or physically, controlled, impulsive, restorative, or punitive.

APR’s approach also considers the conditions that elicit anger, including insult, rudeness, indifference, deception, betrayal, abandonment, rejection, broken promises, ingratitude, exploitation, ineptitude, inconvenience, and assault.

APR’s approach examines anger across several areas:

  • How often anger occurs

  • How long anger lasts

  • How intense anger becomes

  • How quickly anger develops

  • How little it takes for anger to occur

  • How anger is expressed

  • How anger affects conflict, judgment, health, relationships, work, legal standing, or daily functioning

  • Which prevention, intervention, or postvention techniques may be appropriate

Cognitive Behavioural Affective Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Affective Therapy, also known as CBAT, is a structured program for regulating maladaptive anger.

The aim is not to eradicate anger. Anger has a function. It can signal that a person has been wronged. The aim is to make anger regulated so that it is functional rather than dysfunctional.

CBAT follows a sequence of prevention, intervention, and postvention. Prevention is the starting point and focuses on reducing the likelihood of anger before it occurs. Intervention focuses on anger that has already been ignited. Postvention addresses residual anger that may remain after prevention and intervention.

The program uses behavioral, cognitive, and affective techniques. Behavioral techniques include contract, rehearsal, response prevention, and stimulus control. Cognitive techniques include thought stopping, reappraisal, relaxation, and distraction. Affective techniques address the feeling of anger through disclosure, expressive art, humor, forgiveness, and related methods.
